Summer Homework Entry 4, The Monstromologist

The reason I decided to go with this book was decided by many factors. I like monster and horror types of books and while scrolling through the list I came across exactly that. My mom also told me that the reviews for the book were outstanding and that it would be perfect for me, in which case, I decided it was the book I wanted to read for my summer homework. In fact I'm on the third book in the series right now and it has been one of my favorite series I've ever read.
I would recommend this book to you if you like books that add up the suspense, leave you questioning everything that will happen next, makes you want to keep reading to you finished the book and, an interest in monsters or creatures which may seem obscene but are pretty cool. If you like some of these books I'm going to list I believe the book would be right for you: Percy Jackson, Michael Vey, Riptide, Harry Potter, Rangers Apprentice, The adventures of Nicholas Flamel, and Legend.
This book is extremely good and I would recommend it to you even if you hate all those listed books.

Summer Homework Entry 3, The Monstromologist

"And now she, the matriarch, the mother of the Anthropophagi, with her one remaining eye spied me standing beside her precious progeny, whom her instincts demanded she defend, as the doctor said, to her last breath with ruthless ferocity. Her own pain did not matter. What animated her was as old as life itself, the same irresistible force that the doctor had marveled at in the pastor's parlor : How strong is the maternal instinct, Will Henry!
That overriding compulsion now drove her toward the spot where I cowered, frozen in fear' s icy grip, wavering in insensitive agony, for even in her injured state she moved with frightening speed and would catch me should I make a run for the passageway - which may or may not still have been open."
I believe this part of the book would "hook" in the readers because it has suspense and leads the reader to question what Will Henry will do to survive the mother of the Anthropophagi. But that may also not be the case because unknowing what's going to happen, for all they may think, she could not attack him at all. That's why I believe this is a good passage to hook in the readers.

Summer Homework: Entry 2, The Monstrumologist

Entry Two
The two main characters that I stated in my last post are Will Henry and Dr. Warthrop. They are both very complex and have many wants. As I have also stated in my first post, Will only wants to have his family back and Warthrop wants to be recognized for his work. But throughout the book they discover they have more than just one thing they want from time to time. One example is when Will loses his hat in the Old Cemetery while being chased by Anthropophagi and misses it dreadfully because it is his only possesion that he owns from his parents and he cant stand to lose it. Another example is that Warthrop wants to clear his dads name because everybody believes that the Anthropophagi got to New Jerusalem, America by the boat that his dad brought over.
I believe that the theme of this book is just because it is written doesn't mean it is fact. I believe this because Will always tells Warthrop they should warn the Constable of the Anthropophagi because they may attack and slaughter families, but Warthrop tells will it is written and studied for thousands of years that they don't feed in that short of periods. And of course the next morning a family is slaughtered with one survivor. This happens 2 times so I believe it is a fitting theme.

Summer Homework: Entry 1, The Monstrumologist

Entry One:
The book I choose to read for my Summer Homework is "The Monstrumologist" by Rick Yancey. The two major characters are Will Henry and Dr. Warthrop. They both desire many things but each desire one thing the most. For Will Henry this thing is to have his parents back having had both of them die in a fire. On the other hand Dr. Warthrop wants to be remembered and recognized for all of his work. Dr. Warthrop does his job in secrecy because that is what it requires, so he knows that he will waste his whole life to never be recognized for what he does.
The setting is New Jerusalem, America. Inside this city some of the main places they visit is The Old Cemetery, Motley Hill Sanatorium, and Dr. Warthrop's house. The conflict in this book is Dr. Warthrop and Will Henry versus the Anthropophagi, a mythical beast. Erasmus Grey first brings them the dead body of an Anthropophagi from a grave in the Old Cemetery. Dr. Warthrop, after examination realizes what it is and explains to Will. He also tells him how they are not native to America. HE also tells him that they need to go hunting and stop them from spreading, for they are dangerous to humans. I predict they may get more than they bargain for at the Old Cemetery.

Final blogging assessment question 2

1    2.     What purposeful diction AND syntax choices did you make to enhance your writer’s voice? You must choose to discuss at least one diction AND one syntax technique from the list below. Make sure to include textual evidence from your post where you included the diction and syntax choices you discuss.
Response:      My syntax choice that enhanced my writer’s voice was sentence length which is medium. I chose this one because a medium sentence length allows you to get the message across to the reader without boring them and not making it feel to long. An example of this is when I write, “Maybe I wasn’t far enough into it because to me it was a total bore” I was able to tell the reader I found it boring and it may have been because I wasn’t far enough into it without a lengthy explanation. For my diction that I used to enhance my writer’s voice, I used was low or informal diction. An example of this is when I say, “I may continue reading some other time but not now” this shows low diction because I could’ve changed continue to presume or another word but I used continue because it is the best word to describe it and has a different meaning that the other words which could be seen as denotation and connotation also.

Final blogging assesment question 1

1.    What specific words/phrases demonstrate your writer’s voice? How do these words/phrases showcase your personality as a writer?
Response:      Throughout this blog post I have used voice to help entertain the reader and “showcase (my) personality as a writer”. In my blog, Why I Stopped Reading the Hobbit posted January 5th 2014, I have a couple examples of voice such as when I say, “I can’t stand reading this book” which demonstrates my voice because it shows my personality and my opinion towards The Hobbit. It allows the reader to pick up the authors tone and how he (in this case me), feels about the book while they may also pick up a mood from the authors tone. Another example of voice is when I said, “Maybe I wasn’t far enough into it because to me it was a total bore” and this shows my voice because it reflects my personality and tells the reader what books I may like or that I don’t like the beginning of the book.

Behavior of the people

In my book Champion by Marie Lu the many characters in this book show how people in real life act because they have situations that people today can relate to. For example, the people in the town are being shot and once people around saw this they acted out in terror and ran for the lives some trampling others to get I safety. In reality citizens would act like this to because most people don't want to necessarily die. This could this can be Sen in real life in foreign countries that are being hit by drone strikes because the citizens run for cover and if are brave enough will try and help others.

This can also be seen in the book when Day is over protective of his brother and won't allow the Republic take take him for testing. He knows hat it may be the only chance to save them but his brother had already been through testing that took his eye sight and he doesn't want him to go through another one. In reality family looks after each other like this too because family loves each other and looks out for each other. Day was only looking out for his brothers safety because he was the only family he had left. This shows how his work related to modern society. My question is how protective of your siblings would . You be if the government wanted to take your sibling for kill them.

Text to Text, Self, and World

In my book Champion by Marie Lu I can make a ton of connections to other books, video games, etc. But its these connections that allow me to relate even more to the book and have an even better idea of what Marie is trying to say or get across to the reader. One of the connections is a text to text connection. In the book Champion when they visit Alaska their world is all about being a high level in a video game where they want to do as many good things as possible or amazing feats to get to the top of the hierarchy. A book that this reminded me of is Epic by Conor Kostick.  In this book they too settle everything by playing a video game and becoming more powerful makes you more respected.

Another connection I had was text to world, and this is related to World of Warcraft developed by the company Blizzard. In this game you start at level 1 and work your way up to level 90 (the max level) and once you do you get great rewards and people respect you. But to be more specific in this game, you start out with barely anything and by doing quests and good things for other people you get rewards and level up which gains you access to more advanced places just like Alaska in Champion.

My last connection is to myself and it rolls into the same category as the second one because it involves World of Warcraft. I have played that and payed for the subscription fee for one month and realized I didn't like it that much. I too wanted to get to the highest level and know what it felt like to be very powerful but I realized there were much better things to do in life. My question is, does World of Warcraft sound like a good game TO YOU?

The best things about my book: Michael Vey, Battle of the Ampere

I have been reading the Michael Vey series since I was young and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this next book. Michael Vey, Battle of the Ampere by Richard Paul Evans is such a great book that I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. There is foreshadowing all throughout the book to the point when they are almost even handed a prophecy. In the book, spoken from a Amarrcan chief, he says, "You must choose between the lives of s few you love or the loves of many you don't know." This foreshadowing was so fascinating I couldn't help but read on and see what he would have to do. In the  it was even better than I was hoping for having a big fight to stop Dr.Hatch.

Another great thing about my book is the never ending suspense. This will lead you onto so many different paths and you think of every option they could do to either escape from the Peruvian army or to apprehend Dr. Hatch. While Dr. Hatch knows that Michael will always be coming for him because if he doesn't attempt to stop him he would be putting the whole world's lives st risk. Michael Vet is one of the best series I have ever read and greatly recommend to anybody. One main point I left out is that all of the main characters have powers where they can use electricity in some type of way excluding Ostin, Wade, and Jack. My question is, if you could have a power involving electricity what would it be? (Some of the powers involve shooting lightning or rebooting people's minds.)

Setting of House of Hades

                                                Setting

I have recently finished the books "Key of Minds" and "Steelheart" and am now moving on to the book "House of Hades" by Rick Riordan. I am about 100 pages into the book and the setting in the book has changed many many times. The book started at the Mediterranean Sea, with Hazel, Piper, Leo, Jason, and Percy's friends all trying to find the Doors of Death to retrieve them from Tartarus which leads me to my next setting. Percy and Annabeth, have recently fallen into Tartarus after injuring Arachne and are now wondering through the huge underworld trying to get out knowing that anything and everything in Tartarus will try and kill them. A major place in Tartarus so far is the River named Pyriphlegethon. the river of fire, which goes on throughout the whole underworld and that's when Percy and Annabeth decide to follow it to see if it leads to the doors.

In the book you also can make a prediction of where they are going to House of Hades because one, the Doors of Death are located in there, two, Hecate tells them of their rivals waiting there, and three, it's in the books name itself. The setting moves from place to place so often that it is sometimes hard to remember where they are, having to go on many side quests to help them in the main one. I can't wait to see where this book leads me and to see what complications get in their way. My question is, if you came along them and they asked for help, what would you do?

Why I stopped reading the Hobbit

The book, The Hobbit, is said to be amazing and a great read that makes you want to continue reading throughout the whole night. Although it also has a 4.19 rating out of 5 on goodreads.com, I can't stand reading the book. Maybe I wasn't far enough into it because to me it was a total bore. I may have said it was a really good book but that's because I heard it was going to get better and I was a little biased from part 1 of the hobbit trilogy. I may continue reading some other time but not now.

Also I have a continuous flow of books from the library of books that my mom thinks I will find interesting. It pressured me to read The Hobbit quicker and made me realize it was something I didn't want to be doing. Now that I have gave reasons for discontinuing the read of The Hobbit, I am now reading a book called The Eye of Minds, by James Dashner. My summary of what this book is about will be in my next post. My question is, do you read a book before you go watch the movie?
